The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in college basketball. An original list of 60-plus candidates was trimmed by a Hall of Fame appointed, nationally-based committee to the below
list of 11 student-athletes.

talent necessary to make an elite point guard” said John L. Doleva, President & CEO of the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. “The Hall of Fame looks forward to watching these
players compete for one of college basketball’s most prestigious awards.”
“The list is getting harder and harder to trim down” said Ken Kauffman, Chair of the 2012 Bob
Cousy Award. “We have so many elite college point guards that represent what Mr. Cousy
epitomized as a player.”
Beginning Wednesday, February 6th, via the Bob Cousy Award’s website –
www.cousyaward.com – fans will be able to vote for the top point guard. The player that
receives the most fan votes will receive one vote toward the final committee vote. Fan voting
will run one month – beginning February 6th and will conclude March 6th.
Previous winners of the Bob Cousy Award have included Jameer Nelson (St. Joseph’s),
Raymond Felton (North Carolina), Dee Brown (Illinois), Acie Law (Texas A & M), DJ Augustin
(Texas), Ty Lawson (North Carolina), Greivis Vasquez (Maryland) and last year’s recipient

The current listing of 11 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be narrowed down to 5
players on March 8th. The final five players in contention for the award will be presented to Mr.
Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The Hall of Fame committee is made up of
top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, Sports Information
Directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2012 Bob Cousy Award will be awarded at the
Hall of Fame’s Class Announcement on Monday April 2nd in New Orleans as part of NCAA
Final Four weekend.

2012 Morgan Wootten Award winner Announces of Basketball Hall of Fame
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today the winners of the 2012 Morgan Wootten Award for lifetime achievement in Coaching High School Basketball.This prestigious award is named after Morgan Wootten, who is one of two high school coaches enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The annual award is presented to one boy’s basketball coach and one girl’s basketball
coach.The 2012 winner of the Morgan Wootten Award for boy’s basketball is Ed Pepple from Mercer Island High School (Mercer Island, WA). Pepple is the longest-tenured basketball coach in the state of Washington. He has coached at Mercer Island since 1968 and immediately impacted the program. Pepple has led his teams to 21 KingCo championships, four state championships, and was runner-up four times. He has the most wins of any active head coach (902-305), and has appeared in 26 state championships. Pepple has been named Washington State Coach of the Year seven times and named Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 1997. The 2012 winner of the Morgan Wootten Award for girls’ basketball is Brad Smith from Oregon City High School (Oregon City, OR). Coach Smith has coached the Oregon City High School girl’s basketball team for 27 seasons, compiling a 654-94 win-loss record (.874), the best record by far among retired and current girls coaches in the state. His teams won 25 league championships; an unprecedented 10 state titles; and they were named “USA Today National Champions” in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Smith has received many honors, including National High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year, Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, the Oregon Banquet of Champions Slats Gill Coach of the Year and Citizen of the Year in 2007.
“Coach Pepple and Coach Smith are both great ambassadors to the game of basketball,” said John. L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “They have impacted the lives of many young student athletes, and we are honored to recognize their achievements in coaching high school basketball.”
“I am extremely honored to be presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to Coach Pepple and Coach Smith as they both represent excellence in the game of basketball at all levels,” said Hall of Fame Class of 2000 member Morgan Wootten.
The Morgan Wootten Award winners were selected by a nationally based committee comprised of Hall of Famers, national high school media members, tournament directors and others that have significantly impacted the game. Morgan Wootten will present the awards at the 2012 McDonald’s All-American Game events this March in Chicago, Illinois.
Previous award boys’ basketball award winners have included Jack Curran (Archbishop Molloy, NY), Joe Gallagher (St. John’s College, DC), Ralph Tasker (Hobbs High School, NM), Robert Hughes (Fort Worth Dunbar, TX) and Bob Hurley, Sr. (St. Anthony’s, NJ). Previous winners of the girls’ basketball award have included Leta Andrews (Granbury High School, TX), Jim Smiddy (Bradley Central, TN), Dorothy Gaters (Chicago Marshall, IL), Rick Insell (Shelbyville, TN) and Gene Klinge (West Central of Maynard, IA).
2012 Hall nominees super listed Krause,Divac & Warriors
Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, Jerry Krause and Vlade Divac top the list of new nominees with league ties for the Hall of Fame, NBA.com learned Friday. They are among a field that joins returning headliner Reggie Miller as candidates for the Class of 2012 in Springfield, Mass.
The group is, in many ways, a continuation of the '11 class. Chris Mullin was inducted in August, and now friends and Run TMC namemates Richmond and Hardaway are hoping to follow. The strength of the Divac nomination is his international impact and contribution to the worldwide growth of the game, much the same way Arvydas Sabonis was elected, with his NBA contributions secondary on the resume.
Miller is hoping to replicate the path of Dennis Rodman by going from not making it out of the first round of voting in the first year of eligibility all the way to being elected in the second. And former personnel boss Krause and ex-assistant coach John Bach, along with retired coach Dick Motta among the returning nominees, could make it a Bulls-heavy class for the second year in a row.
The Warriors are also well represented, with Richmond, Hardaway, Bach, Don Nelson, Mark Jackson, Al Attles, Sarunas Marciulionas, Bernard King and Ralph Sampson on the ballot. The Pacers have prominent ties with Miller, Jackson, Donnie Walsh and three leading candidates via the ABA committee; Slick Leonard, Mel Daniels and George McGinnis.
Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Diana Ross win 2012 Grammy Award Red Carpet
The Grammys are always one of the most exciting events of the year and provide some of the best style moments.
With the untimely passing of Whitney Houston there was definitely a more somber mood to the evening, but the music industry's top stars still managed to look great and get, well, creative. Enter Nicki Minaj.
Minaj was back to her costume-wearing antics last night. The "Roman Holiday" rapper donned a red Versace cape and accessorized with a date dressed as a Pope look alike. After impressing us with her pretty pared-down look on the cover of Paper magazine, we thought there was a chance she would leave all the shock value behind. Oh well!
Rihanna was our hands-down our favorite style star of the night. The Barbadian beauty showed off her amazing body in a black custom-made Armani Prive gown that was simple but disarmingly sexy.
The biggest winner of the night, Adele, was also dressed in Armani Prive. The British singer looked exceptionally chic (take that Karl!) as she was honored with six Grammys and performed for the first since vocal cord surgery.
Other style standouts were Alicia Keys in a modern LBD, Kelly Price in a sparkly dusty rose colored gown and of course the always fabulous Diana Ross who wore a chic black suit with embellished sleeves.
MU Hall of Famers news
Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame members Hal Greer and Jack Freeman had a discussion about their former team this week.
Freeman watched the Thundering Herd's loss Wednesday at UCF and Greer said his former teammate told him, "They're a great team and can rebound and all that stuff, but they can't shoot."
Well, they definitely could shoot Saturday night.
With Freeman, Greer and many other Marshall men's basketball alumni in the building Saturday night, Marshall gunned down East Carolina, 78-68, before a Cam Henderson Center crowd of 6,447.
Marshall (15-10 season, 6-5 Conference USA) connected on a season-best 54 percent of its field goal attempts, made 50 percent of its 3-point shots in its second-best performance and had one of its best free throw efforts by making 14 of 18 for 77.8 percent.
All that by a team that was 11th on the 12-team C-USA field goal percentage list (42.5), 11th in 3-point percentage (30.7) and last in free throws (61.1).
"I thought we moved the ball tonight," Marshall head coach Tom Herrion said. "We played inside-out. Our ball movement was really good. The guys played with confidence."
Senior point guard Damier Pitts made nine of 17 shots and six of seven free throws in a 27-point game that was one shy of his career high. Another senior guard, Shaq Johnson, was 4-for-6 on field goals and made all five of his free throws for 14 points.
Junior forward Rob Goff added 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting.
Marshall played without sophomore guard Dre Kane, its leading scorer with a 15.9 average, who attended his father's funeral Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"Once again I want to offer our sincere sympathy and condolences to DeAndre and his family," Herrion said.
Kane's absence left an opening for someone to step up and freshman guard Chris Martin was the one.
Martin had played for only 23 minutes all season. He entered the game when Pitts was called for his second foul at 14:23 of the first half. Martin's first college 3-pointers accounted for Marshall's next six points. Another 3-pointer in the second half gave him nine points in 22 minutes on the court.
Freshman forward Jamir Hanner also rang up his first Marshall 3-point shot in the first half when the Herd edged ahead, 36-35.
"They needed someone to score for Kane," said ECU head coach Jeff Lebo.
East Carolina jumped ahead, 37-36 on Robert Sampson's layup to open the second half before Marshall shooters took aim again.
On consecutive Marshall possessions Pitts and Johnson were fouled on 3-point tries and awarded three free throws. They combined to make six in a row and the Herd had a 47-43 lead with 14:58 remaining,
Sampson's 3-pointer with 10:17 left to play put the Pirates back in the lead at 52-51.
Then Marshall delivered the final blow, a 16-1 run that included 3-point baskets by Martin, Johnson, Pitts and Dago Pena to pull away, 67-53, with 6:02 to go.
East Carolina fell to 12-12 for the season and 3-8 in the conference. The Pirates also had a good shooting night at 53.5 percent and also made 10 of its 3-point attempts, and it wasn't enough.
Miguel Paul, the Pirates' point guard had 19 points and 11 assists. Sampson, a sophomore forward, also recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sampson is the son of former University of Virginia star and former NBA All-Star player Ralph Sampson, who once came to Huntington for a summer league game.
ECU forward Darius Morrow burned Marshall for a career-high 33 points in last season's victory at Marshall, but was held in check with just 11.
It was sort of a pick-your-poison situation for Marshall, which chose to lock down on Morrow and give up some 3-pointers.
"We worked all week in practice on fronting the post, and that's what we did," Goff said.
Greer and the gang returned to town for a Friday night farewell to Veterans Memorial Field House event. The building that housed the Herd from 1950-81 will be torn down soon and replaced with a Marshall soccer complex and a veterans park.
Herrion said former star players Russell Lee, Ronny Dawn, J.R. VanHoose and David Wade were in the locker room before the game.
"We talked about those guys wearing the same uniform," Herrion said.
