Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was arrested again
on Monday, just days after he posted bail on similar charges that he
burglarized a home and stole prescription drugs, authorities said.Leaf was first arrested on Friday after police found oxycodone pills
in his golf bag that an acquaintance later said Leaf stole from his
home.Early Monday, three days after posting a $76,000 bond, he was
arrested again on accusations that he broke into another home outside
Great Falls, Central Montana Drug Task Force commander Chris Hickman said.
The owners walked into the home Sunday afternoon to find a "tall man
with an athletic build" inside, Hickman said. The man told the owners
he had the wrong address and left.
The owners later discovered three bottles of prescription medicines
missing and phoned police. After describing his truck, his clothes and
his "shiny black loafers," they picked Leaf out of a photo lineup.
A search of Leaf's home turned up 89 hydrocodone pills loose in the pocket of a bathrobe.
Leaf's attorney, Ken Olsen, did not respond to a call for comment
Leaf tested positive for drugs at the time of his arrest Friday,
according to a sworn statement filed by Hickman with Cascade County
District Court.
Elsewhere: Wide receiver Torry Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowler with the St. Louis Rams, will sign a one-day contract with the franchise on Wednesday and then retire.
A first-round pick in 1999, Holt caught 869 passes for 12,594 yards and 74 touchdowns with St. Louis.
Police say Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was caught chewing marijuana during a recent traffic stop in Michigan. Berrien County prosecutor Art Cotter said Leshoure was due in court Monday but hadn't appeared by 4 p.m.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he would not object if New Orleans asks Bill Parcells to replace the suspended Sean Payton,
adding it was the Saints' decision. Goodell said he expects to hear
appeals from Payton and other Saints officials this week, and hopes to
make a ruling shortly thereafter.
TENNIS: Citing a "minor health scare," Mardy Fish
pulled out of this week's Davis Cup quarterfinal with France. After
consulting two doctors, Fish was told he needed to rest. Agent John
Tobias said doctors had ruled out any long-term problems.
Fish is ranked No. 9 in the world.
SOCCER: Late goals by Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young gave
Manchester United a 2-0 win over host Blackburn. With second-place
Manchester City drawing with Sunderland, 3-3 on Saturday, United has
opened a five-point lead in the English Premier League with seven games
left in the season.
CYCLING: American cyclist Levi Leipheimer
said he felt "lucky to be alive" after he was hit from behind by a car
while training for a race by himself in Guenes, Spain. He was treated
at a hospital for a sore and swollen lower left leg, but he had no
broken bones, his Italian team said.
COLLEGES: Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino
veered off a two-lane highway in north of Little Rock on Sunday night,
crashing his motorcycle and winding up in the hospital. No other
vehicles or persons were involved.
State Police spokesman Bill Sadler confirmed the accident. The coach's family said in a statement released by the school that Petrino was in "stable condition."
WINTER SPORTS: Tests showed world champion skiier Lindsey Vonn has fraying of the meniscus in her left knee, but no tear, and will not need surgery.
Vonn who compiled the most points ever by a female skier this past
season as she recaptured the overall World Cup crown. She was chasing Hermann Maier's record mark of 2,000 points, but finished just shy at 1,980.
